Aïoun El Atrouss

Aïoun — also known as Aïoun El Atrouss — is the jewel of Mauritania's Hodh El Gharbi region and a leading destination for ecological and desert tourism. It is one of the country's most beautiful areas, where golden dunes meet rocky heights and where natural water pockets and oases abound, drawing lovers of safari and desert travel. The region is at its finest during the rainy season: with the seasonal rains the landscape takes on an enchanting green mantle, and sites such as Jouf Terni, Tembembé and El Makhroukat become natural retreats where visitors come for the sweeping scenery. Alongside its landscapes, the town sustains an active cultural life, above all the Aïoun Festival for the Development of Culture and Heritage, a major draw for visitors and Mauritanians alike, offering a window onto traditional crafts, folk arts and Saharan literature. Aïoun also holds notable religious and historic landmarks, foremost among them the Old Mosque (Jamaa El Atig), founded in 1948, a fine expression of Islamic and Saharan architecture.
