The Erg Maghteir (or Makhteir) belongs to that mighty chain of dune fields running from western Algeria, west of the Saoura, all the way to the shores of the Atlantic. Beginning under the general name of Erg Chech, the system ends its course in the ocean as the Azefal. Here a headland of the Adrar plateau rises like the prow of a ship: the Tarf Tazazmout, marking the entrance to the corridor that leads to one of the great sites of the Mauritanian Sahara, El Beyyed.
