Azougui

A dynasty set out from here. Azougui is an ancient oasis town and a major archaeological site in the Adrar massif, known for having been, in the eleventh century, the birthplace and military base of the Almoravids. From this point in the desert began a movement that reached north into al-Andalus and south to Ghana, and that founded Marrakesh. What remains today is the ruins and the oasis, but the geography has not changed: the position the Almoravids chose as their base can still be read in the ground.
