4 days 1 065 800 USD 4 stops

Experience the very best of Mauritania in one unforgettable loop: hidden mountain oases, the ancient landscapes of the Adrar, a night aboard the world-famous iron ore train — one of the longest trains on Earth — and the Atlantic shores of Nouadhibou. Four intense days and three nights, for those short on time but big on passion. Route: Nouakchott – Oum Tounsi – Akjoujt – Ain Ehel Taya – Terjit – M'Haireth – Atar – Choum – desert train – Nouadhibou – Cap Blanc (Ras Nouadhibou) – Chami – Nouakchott. Transport by 4x4 with a professional desert driver and an accompanying guide, and a night on the iron ore train with mattresses, blankets and provisions. Accommodation: a traditional camp or auberge under the stars at Terjit, one night aboard the train, and a hotel in Nouadhibou. Meals as indicated day by day. Adventure note: the train usually passes Choum in the evening and its timing can vary by a few hours — that's part of the experience! Highlights: Ain Ehel Taya at the gateway of the Adrar · the Terjit oasis between canyon walls · the M'Haireth palm grove between golden dunes and dark cliffs · the Atar market and its craftsmen · the colonial-era Choum Tunnel · a night under the stars on a train up to 2.5 km long · Cap Blanc and the rare monk seal · the Nouakchott fishing port.

Itinerary

  1. 1

Nouakchott to Terjit and the M'Haireth Oasis

    Terjit Oasis

Early morning departure from Nouakchott, heading north-east through Oum Tounsi and the copper-mining town of Akjoujt, then a scenic stop at Ain Ehel Taya, a natural spring at the gateway of the Adrar plateau — a perfect photo and tea break.

Arrival at the magical Terjit Oasis, nestled between canyon walls with its permanent springs and lush palm grove; lunch in the shade of the palms. In the afternoon, an excursion to the beautiful M'Haireth Oasis, one of the largest palm groves of the Adrar, surrounded by golden dunes and dark cliffs. Return to Terjit in the late afternoon.

Meals: lunch and dinner. Overnight: Terjit (traditional camp / auberge under the stars).

  2. 2

Terjit to Atar and Choum — Night Aboard the Desert Train

The Desert Train and Choum Station

After breakfast, we drive to Atar, the historic capital of the Adrar region. A morning discovering the city: the traditional market, silver and leather craftsmen, and the authentic atmosphere of this caravan crossroads. Lunch in Atar, then departure across dramatic desert scenery to Choum.

On arrival, our team confirms the expected arrival time of the iron ore train (the train usually passes Choum in the evening; timing can vary by a few hours — this is part of the adventure!). While waiting, we visit the famous Choum Tunnel, a remarkable relic of colonial-era railway engineering carved through the rock, then return to the station area for dinner.

Boarding the legendary Desert Train — up to 2.5 km long — for a once-in-a-lifetime night ride through the Sahara toward the Atlantic coast, under an endless sky of stars.

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: aboard the iron ore train (Choum → Nouadhibou).

  3. 3

Arrival in Nouadhibou and the Cap Blanc Excursion

    Nouadhibou

Morning arrival in Nouadhibou, Mauritania's economic capital and great fishing port. Transfer to the hotel: hot shower, breakfast and well-deserved rest after the train adventure.

Lunch, then an afternoon excursion to Cap Blanc (Ras Nouadhibou): dramatic cliffs, the famous shipwreck coastline, and — with luck — sightings of the rare Mediterranean monk seal. Free time to explore the bay and enjoy the ocean breeze.

Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: hotel in Nouadhibou.

  4. 4

Nouadhibou to Nouakchott — Fish Market and Farewell

    Nouakchott

After breakfast, departure south along the Atlantic route via Chami, arriving in Nouakchott in the afternoon.

A final visit to the vibrant Fish Market (Port de Pêche): hundreds of colorful pirogues returning with the day's catch — one of the most spectacular scenes in West Africa. End of the program and farewell, your heart full of the sands of the Adrar and the stars of the train.

    Meals: breakfast.
